the poor serving the poor

it was a great way to close my time at gatzert.

last year, my teacher took her students to 3rd and yesler — a park across the street from the king county courthouse — to serve sack lunches to the homeless community. it was such a transformative experience for her kids, she did it again this year.

a bunch of kids, most of whom are in transitional housing, all with some disability, serving the homeless.

i walked to the park alongside a boy with some really violent tendencies. at one point, he let go of my hand and took a swing at another boy. he talked to me about his desire to do a drive-by-shooting with a bb gun, what might happen if he jumped in front of a car, and — as we crossed the freeway overpass — leaping off the bridge. just a 4th grader. what drives someone so young to have thoughts like that?
